Start Leading Now

I have been in the video game industry for three decades and from when I first became a team leader for the development of PGA European Tour for the PC I have been in some sort of leadership position.

I believe that true leadership goes beyond titles and positions. It’s about gaining a unique perspective and sharing it with others.

How to gain a Unique Perspective
To gain a personal point of view, it is imperative to recognise the significance of lifelong learning. This involves a continuous commitment to acquiring knowledge, honing skills, and staying abreast of evolving trends.

Lifelong learning serves as the foundation for broadening one’s understanding and cultivating a distinctive viewpoint.

Much like crafting an innovative gameplay experience, effective leaders understand that embracing a mindset of perpetual learning allows them to navigate challenges with both insight and foresight.

I believe true leaders are distinguishable by their commitment to ongoing learning. By consistently expanding their knowledge base, leaders can adapt to changing landscapes, discover new opportunities, and foster a dynamic perspective that sets them apart. That’s unique.

Lifelong learning becomes a cornerstone for those aspiring to lead. It enables us to see beyond the ordinary. It enables us to inspire innovation within our teams and projects. That’s truly valuable.

Are you already a leader?
How can you tell if you’re a leader? One simple way is to look behind you and see if anyone is following.

True leadership is defined by the number of team members inspired by your vision and motivated by your actions.

It’s possible you are already inspiring and motivating others without you even realising it.

This type of leadership is not confined to just one craft such as design or production. Inspiring and motivating others is certainly not just for those with leadership titles.

Regularly assess your influence within your development team. Are your colleagues inspired by your innovative approach? If so, you’re not just a leader; you’re actively shaping the direction of your team.

Truly Effective Leaders: Anointed, Not Appointed
The age-old adage suggests that truly effective leaders are anointed rather than appointed. While titles and positions may confer authority, true leadership is earned through influence, respect, and the ability to bring out the best in others.

This means that typically someone notices you as a leader then anoints you with the title, not the other way around. That might be frustrating at times but keep doing the right things and the recognition will come.

What are the right things?
Keep learning and growing to cultivate your unique and valuable perspective. Be the catalyst for positive change, volunteer and step up when you’re needed. Soon you’ll find yourself anointed as a leader, acknowledged by your peers and followers alike.

Walk your own road to leadership
Your leadership journey is brimming with opportunities to shape your own narrative. Embrace your unique perspective, earn your leadership through innovative actions, and always stay open to the idea that you may be inspiring others and attracting genuine followers. People who want to follow your lead, not people who have to. Remember, in the dynamic world of game development, as with so many knowledge-based industries, leadership is about continuous evolution and the positive impact you create on those who choose to follow you.
