I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Gi.Biz HR Summit at the prestigious The Royal Instituion in London about my experience in managing teams during times of change.
Eighty games studios of all sizes attended the event. This included the likes of Bandai Namco, Creative Assembly, Devolver, Dlala, Electric Square, Frontier, Futurlab, Hangar13, King, Ninja Theory, Playground Games, PlayStation, Rare, Rocksteady, Sports Interactive, Sumo, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Warner Bros and many more.
The talk, titled "Weathering the Storm: Building Trust and Positivity in Challenging Times," focused on the importance of building TRUST, one of the 7 pillars of Liberated Leadership. I also shared the importance of the key practice for building trust. active patience.
I emphasised that trust is not a given, but rather a valuable commodity that requires consistent effort from leaders. I outlined three key steps to building trust:
1. Predictable Leadership: Communicate clearly and consistently to keep your team informed.
2. Following Through: Be reliable and dependable by fulfilling your commitments.
3. Ethical Leadership: Prioritise doing the right thing and set a positive example.
I acknowledged the challenges leaders face in building trust, such as uncertainty, constraints, and the risk of prioritizing business over ethical considerations. I stressed the importance of values-driven decision-making and the cultivation of "active patience" – understanding that progress takes time and setbacks are normal. I shared a personal anecdote about a challenging decision I faced early in my career, illustrating the importance of considering values when making difficult choices.
